THOMAS SKINNER
1718-1754
Thomas was born on the 1st May, 1718 in Cranbrook, Kent, and was christened on the 4th May, 1718. He married Mary Turner who was born in 1719 at Woodchurch, Kent and christened on the 12th March, 1719 at Allsaints, Woodchurch.. They were married on the 26th June, 1745 at Allsaints, Woodchurch. In 1753 they moved to Brightling with 3 children under a settlement agreement from the church wardens.

Sussex to wit
We Stephen FULLER, Joseph CRUTTENDEN and Joshua PELLING Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Brightling in the County of Sussex aforesaid, do hereby own and acknowledge Thomas SKINNER and Mary his wife and Gabriel about four years old and Sarah about two years old and an infant not baptised their children to be our Inhabitants legally settled in the Parish of Brightling in the County of Sussex aforesaid. In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seals this seventeenth day of September in the 27th year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the 2nd. by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King Defender of the Faith, and in the Year of our Lord 1753.

We whose names are hereunto subscribed, two of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the County of Sussex aforesaid do allow of the above written certificate and we do also certify That Edward FRENCH — the Witness who attested the Execution of the said Certificate, hath made oath before us, he did see the Churchwardens and Overseers whose Names and Seals are to the said Certificate subscribed and set severally sign and seal the said Certificate, and that the names of the said Edward FRENCH and Wm. GREGSON — whose names are above subscribed as Witness to the Execution of the said Certificate, are of their own proper Hand-writing Dated the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord 1753

They only had the 3 children mentioned in the Settlement Certificate, the unnamed child being Elizabeth Skinner born in 1753 at Kingsnorth. Sarah Skinner was christened on the 19th August, 1751 at St. Michaels, Kingsnorth and married William Webb on the 21st May, 1772 at St. Dunstan, Cranbrook. Gabriel Skinner was christened on the 26th November, 1748 at St. Michaels, Kingsnorth.
Thomas Skinner died in 1754 at Cranbrook in Kent.
GABRIEL SKINNER
1748-1828
Gabriel, the oldest son of Thomas Skinner and Mary Turner was born in 1748 at Kingsnorth and moved to Brightling with his parents in 1753. He married Sarah Baker on the 24th November, 1770 at St. Peter, Oare in Kent. Sarah was born in August, 1751 at Kingsnorth, her parents were Henry Baker (1723-1778) and Ann Phillips (1726-1778).
They had 12 children, Gabriel born in 1771 at Hollingbourne. Sarah Skinner born in 1774 and married Thomas Kemp on the 18th December, 1796 at Brightling.. Thomas born on the 8th December, 1776 at Brightling. Ann born in 1778 at Asburnham. Mary born in June, 1781 at Asburnham. Elizabeth born on the 24th November, 1784 at Brightling. Richard born 24th March, 1787 at Brightling. Harry born 2nd June, 1792 at Brightling. John born 13th September, 1794 at Brightling who married Sarah Highstead in 1818 at Bethersden. Charles born 15th December, 1796 at Brightling who married Harriet Hilder in 1820 at Mountfield and then Elizabeth Clarke in 1829 at Burwash, they came to Australia in 1839 on the Orient. Stephen, born 13th October, 1799 at Brightling who married Ann Rigglesford on the 18thApril, 1821 at Mountfield. Ann born 1800 at Brightling and died in 1802.
They moved to Brightling in 1781 where Gabriel was employed as a carpenter.

Gabriel died on the 9th December, 1828 and was buried at St. Thomas a Beckett in Brightling, Sarah Baker died on the 3rd February, 1842 at Brightling.
GABRIEL SKINNER
1771-1844
Gabriel was christened on the 3rd November, 1771 at Hollingbourne, the oldest of Gabriel Skinner and Sarah Baker’s 12 children. Gabriel married Lydia Capeling on the 30th April, 1798 at St. Margaret, Bethersden. Lydia born in 1776 and christened on the 16th March, 1777 at St. Margaret in Bethersden, was the daughter of John Howard Capeling (1753-1809) and Lydia Saunders (1757-1811). Apparently the Capeling’s were wealthy and Gabriel was employed as a carpenter by them and eloped with Lydia against the parents wishes.
They had 10 children, the first, Lydia born in 1796, supports the elopement, as it was 2 years before the marriage took place. Their second child, John born in 1797, was christened on the 9th September, 1798 at Bethersden. Henry born in 1798 at Bethersden. George born 1800 at Canterbury, christened 31st August, 1800 at St. Marys, Canterbury. Gabriel was christened on the 28th May, 1802 at St. Pauls, Canterbury. Harriot was christened on the 8th May, 1803 at St. Pauls, Canterbury. Mary Ann christened on the 5th May, 1805 at St. Pauls, Canterbury and married John Sharpe. Sarah christened on the 28th June, 1807 at St. Pauls, Canterbury. Elizabeth christened on the 22nd October, 1809 at St. Pauls, Canterbury married Johnathon Rigglesford (1807-1892), they came to Australia in 1856 on the Vocalist, with their 11 children. Ann christened 26th February, 1815 at Brightling.
In the 1841 census they were living in Burwash.
Gabriel died on the 21st May, 1844 and is buried at St. Thomas a’ Beckett at Brightling. Lydia died in September, 1843 and is buried at Brightling.
